Rhapis Excelsa

Rhapis Palm

Commonly referred to as the Lady Palm, this multi-stemmed plant features glossy leaves. Its leaf ends are jagged, and the stems are covered in a dark brown fiber that appears woven. Hawaiian grown Rhapis Palms are elegant and columnar in form. The name comes from the Greek word rhapis, meaning needle, a nod to this palm’s signature leaf shape.

Designer Notes

  • Also called Lady Palm because clusters of slender leaves look similar to a hand.
  • Slow growing and long lifespan.
  • After first being introduced to Japan in the 17th century, the Japanese planted these palms around fortified facilities, relying on the needle-like leaf shape to ward off enemies.
