Strelitzia Nicolai

Bird of Paradise

Utilized in interiors for its large foliage instead of its flower, the Bird of Paradise rarely blooms in applications other than botanical gardens or greenhouses. The Bird of Paradise was a status symbol of eighteenth-century European royals, and the Strelitzia genus is named after Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who married King George III to become Queen of England in 1761. The S. nicolai varietal was named in honor of Czar Nicolas of Russia.

Designer Notes

  • The large upright banana tree shaped leaf causes this plant to easily be mistaken for a banana palm.
  • The Bird of Paradise grows quite tall and wide over time.
  • White Bird of Paradise is preferred over the orange Bird of Paradise for interior use, as the white variety performs better indoors. However, the orange variety’s flowers are bright and colorful and are better known for this reason.
