- The Rex is famous for its colorful ornamental foliage.
- The leaves have a fuzzy texture and come in shades of dark and light green, violets, reds, and pinks.

The Rex grows naturally in forested mountainous valleys in eastern Asia. In 1690, the genus was named after French diplomat and plant collector Michel Bégon, who served as governor of French Canada.
