West Bloomfield, Michigan – Planterra picked-up two top awards from the American Association of Horticulture’s (AmericanHort) International Plantscape Awards for installations of living and green walls in Detroit. Planterra received the Platinum award for the green wall at the Townhouse Restaurant at One Detroit Center and the Gold Award for the 18 x 12 foot living plant wall at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit’s New Center.
Planterra was among only 23 companies to receive this international award at the AmericanHort’s Cultivate show in Columbus, Ohio.
“This award is as much an honor for Detroit as it is for Planterra. It underscores that Detroit’s redevelopment is truly world class and Planterra is humbled to be part of it” says Shane Pliska, President of Planterra.
Townhouse opened its downtown Detroit doors one year ago. The owner wanted to bring in a plant design to help capitalize on their modern aesthetic featuring natural elements. Their beautifully finished wooden tables go perfectly with the lush greenery Planterra has provided.
The installation aimed mainly at enhancing the patio space of the restaurant. The green wall at Townhouse was put together on pre-fit boxes with cut outs for the light fixtures chosen by the Townhouse design team. Planterra’s Botanical Stylists fabricated three sections of cut outs with replica mosses, grass, bark and ferns. Once the walls were created at the conservatory, the team installed them at Townhouse and tailored the sections to make sure they looked as natural as possible. Replica elements sometimes perform better in different environments and with Townhouse’s sometimes outdoor – sometimes indoor patio layout, replica was a cost effective solution that provided greenery year round for bistro guests. In addition to the green wall, Planterra has also placed live Ficus trees throughout the dining area on the patio.
Henry Ford Hospitals Detroit living wall, is an 18 x 12 foot lush wall of various ferns that welcomes those entering at the middle hospital entrance. This sub-irrigated living system contains 5 types of ferns and also Dracena Compactii, Pothos, Nephtytis and Philodendron.
